Guarding the Quarterback, Liz Matis

I recieved an ARC for Guarding the Quaterback and was pleasantly surprised by it. The relationship between Dean and Alexa develops well and isn't forced. I liked Dean and I liked his transformation. Alexa was incredibly likeable and not at all cliched which she could've been. My only criticism is that there wasn't the suspense I was expecting. With a title like Guarding the Quarterback you'd expect that Alexa would have a lot of work to do, instead the book focused on their relationship and the threat to him only came in at the end. Overall, however, I did find it to be an enjoyable read and would definitely reccomend you give it a go.

Title: Guarding The Quarterback

Series: Champions Of The Heart #1

Miss Congeniality meets The Bodyguard

     Alexa Reeves

The quarterback of the NY Kings has a body to die for, and as Dean Walker’s bodyguard I’m right in the line of fire. If that’s not dangerous enough, I’m posing as his girlfriend to keep close. Yet, that isn’t the worst part. He says I need a makeover to pass as his arm candy. Jerk. The more time I spend with him, the more my undercover role blurs with reality, and I’ll lose more than my job if I step over the line and into his bed.

    Dean Walker

Let’s get something straight. I didn’t ask for protection, especially in the form of a female. Isn’t a death threat just another day in the life of a NY quarterback? Still, the owner of the team forces me to accept a security detail led by the tiny but tough Alexa Reeves.

But who is the real Alexa? The bodyguard, sworn to protect me, or the made-over vixen, determined to drive me crazy? As the stalker closes in, I realize I’ve put more than my life in her hands. Will Alexa safeguard my heart as fiercely as my body?

Who the hell was knocking at my door at 7:00 a.m.? Normally, I’d be in bed with a smoking, curvy body snaked around me. Instead I’d become the fucking poster boy for celibacy. Horny as hell, I was not in a good mood. I whipped the door open, ready to take my frustration out on whoever was on the other side.

A barrel of a gun stared back at me. What the fuck? You would think my quick reflexes on the field would serve me off it. In this case they didn’t.

“Bang, bang, you’re dead,” quipped Reeves. My bodyguard smirked as she lowered her gun. “The security in this building sucks. I swept right by the doorman. And if you bothered to check the peephole, you wouldn’t be shitting in your Superman boxers right now.”

She breezed by, rolling a large suitcase behind her. Half naked, I just stood there, thunderstruck. Because of how Reeves looked with her hair down or because of the gun, I couldn’t say—or admit to.

Turning my head as she passed, I detected a slight wobble in her gait, from the heels no doubt. Still, her ass had a sexy sway in the body- hugging skirt. And what a body she had. Why did she hide those curves underneath boxy suits? Criminal. Hitting just above the knee, there was nothing criminal about the length of her skirt. She rocked it like that chick from Madmen, and somehow it was way hotter than a miniskirt.

Parking the suitcase by the end table, she turned and slid the gun inside her blazer, like it was a wallet instead of a weapon.

She was a walking contradiction. Was I more turned on by the way she handled the gun or by her cleavage beckoning me to suffocate myself in it? And those lips, now enhanced with a red gloss, made my morning hard-on roar back with a vengeance.

She looked soft. Touchable. But the look was lost in translation when it came to her body language. With her hands on her hips, she was as tough as the steel of the gun she carried. “Are you going to shut the door or what?”

Taxi cover reveal, Cambria Hebert

TAXI by Cambria Hebert
(a Take It Off novel)
Pub date: May 6th 2016
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

The meter is running…

One night as Rose Crawford steps out of a bar, she gives no second thought to lifting her hand to signal for a cab. After all, it’s the responsible thing to do.

A common occurrence.

Far safer than walking several blocks, alone, in the dark.

A familiar-looking yellow taxi with black, faux-leather seats, running meter on the dash, and a smiling driver pulls up to the curb.

Rose slides in. Gives the driver her address…

But she never reaches her destination.

Instead, she finds herself captive, at the will of a man who isn’t a driver, but a bona fide psychopath.

Trapped in a taxi she can’t escape, Rose begins to panic. As the miles between her and safety grow, hope dwindles. It isn’t until someone else joins her in captivity that her spark of hope is rekindled.

Derek is strong, capable, and surely together they can fight their way to freedom.
Then Rose finds out exactly why she’s been driven into hell. Derek may be an unwilling captive, but he isn’t going to help her.

In fact, he’s there to do the exact opposite.

As I said in my earlier post, I quite enjoyed this book. It is a sweet tale of 2 men who find happiness despite not really looking for it, even though it's what they really want. The touches of humour are welcome and refreshing and I'd encourage everyone to give it a go!

Writing update

So, I was working on a novelette submission for an anthology my publisher is compiling.mive been working on it for a while, even though all up it only took a couple of days.
I had felt it was a bit short, 8200 words, 200 more than the minimum, but the more I added, the more I hated what I'd done to the story. I hadn't realised that I've learned so much from my experience with Breaking the Cycle. I heard my editors voice while I was writing, asking me what something had to do with the story, I tried to structure it the way it should be. I don't think it's particularly fantastic, I never do, but hey, I gave it a go.

I've also got mad plans for the follow up to BTC which I hope to start writing while I'm away. I have it planned and got some ideas tonight and I'm excited to get started. I've also got ideas for the following 2 books but they're not so developed as yet.

Overall things are good, I hope and I'm learning a heap. I'm excited to see where this takes me.

In the wake of a very trying time with both reading and writing I thought I'd give you a bit of insight into my life as an author.

At the moment I'm going through the editing process of Breaking the Cycle. I recieved the beta feedback on Saturday and have been editing accordingly.

I will admit I was a little frustrated at some of the comments, I genuinely think they don't matter. I compare them to what I've read in other books and I feel like it's nitpicking. But then I read a book like Finley and I'm so glad for the nitpicking. I want my book to make sense and I want things to line up, I don't want people to wonder what the hell happened or skip over details because they don't add up. But why don't other published books have the same thing?
Are my editors and beta readers paying more attention? Do they care more?
Are these other books self published and they don't care?
I read books and I can hear my editor's voice saying things she's said to me and I wonder why these authors don't have anyone telling them the same thing, coz it would vastly improve their product.

I was reluctant to change too much in my book, especially the small details but now I know it's going to make my book better. Maybe in the long run people won't even notice but I will. And I think not having something people question is worth the hard work, even if it is annoying.

Finley, Ella Frank.

I hadn't realised that Ella Frank has also written Try. To be honest, I didn't really like Finley. It's a sweet story but I don't think she does it justice.

Brantley sends Daniel away to law school 7 years ago then on Daniel's 30th birthday he sends for him. Sounds like a good story right? Daniel does go back but they never have the conversation about what happened and how the other is feeling or experienced in the intervening years. Daniel was heartbroken when he sent away and he comes back to get Brantley out of his system but eventual gives in. What the hell? There needed to be a conversation, instead they ignore everything and it's all happy. I don't think so. I kept waiting for it to happen and it didn't.

It's also confusing because Daniel is also referred to as Finn, so you have several names being tossed around at the same time. Finley is also written in third person so it's always clear whose pov the story is being told in or whose doing what to whom. With a m/m story you can't say he did this to him because who is who?

Also, the but at the end with Logan and Tate, from try, is weird and goes nowhere. I get now that it's an attempt to tie in try but it was pointless.

There are so many better m/m romances out there, I'd give this one a miss.

Vexed, Phoenyx Slaughter release blitz

I actually recieved Vexed as an ARC so I've already read it and it's great! I wasn't sure about Romeo in the previous books but this gives us another side of him and I like what I read! He's just as sweet as Dante which is a nice surprise. I was surprised by how fast he fell for Athena but it was a good surprise! I'm afraid I don't like Athena. I didn't like her in the previous books and I don't like her now. She's immature and I don't like how she treats Romeo, I think he's justified in what he does.

I also like the glimpses we get of Dante and Karina, it reaffirms what a great couple they are and I can't wait to hear more about them.

I'm really into this series and can't wait for the next one!

AP new - synopsis.jpg

Falling in love will only leave you vexed.

Recent high school graduate, Athena Vale might seem bubbly and uncomplicated, but she has big plans and even bigger dreams, she’s only ever shared with her best friend, Karina. Athena’s strict upbringing has left her curious about taking a walk on the wild side—just once. And she knows exactly who she wants to go wild with.

President of the Iron Bulls MC, Reed “Romeo” Crownover has no shortage of women willing to entertain him. But these days, there’s only one girl on his mind —Athena. When she shows up at his clubhouse on the night of her eighteenth birthday, he decides it’s time to work her out of his system.

But one night turns into two, two turns into three, and soon the no-strings fun turns into something more passionate than either of them expected. An intense romance neither of them have ever experienced or knew they wanted.

She’s half his age.

He doesn’t fit in her world.

She’s leaving for Los Angeles to start a new life in a few days.

Their connection was vexed from the start.

Vexed is the fourth novella in the Iron Bulls MC series. Although Romeo and Athena make brief appearances in the first three books, Vexed can be read as a stand-alone. It does not end on a cliffhanger.

 AP new - excerpt.jpg

All day I begged Karina to let me tag along to her boyfriend’s motorcycle club, but now that I’m here, I’m terrified.

The reality is so much scarier than all the things I’ve fantasized about since the first time I visited the Iron Bulls MC’s clubhouse.

A few weeks ago, I’d dropped Karina off to visit her boyfriend. I hadn’t expected the president of the club to take an interest me. The intensity of his deep blue eyes tied my tongue in knots and I made a fool of myself. That had been during the middle of the day. Things were relatively calm.

Tonight, the clubhouse is in the middle of a big celebration, and I’ve never seen some of sex acts being done around me. Not even on those five-minute Pornhub clips I’ve snuck a peek at once or twice when I found my way around my parents’ firewall.

My best friend has been keeping serious secrets. It blows my mind Karina hangs out around this erotic mayhem and never told me. I’m utterly shocked and throbbing with curiosity about everything I see.

You’re a whore just like your friend.

I give myself a shake, hoping to silent my parents’ ever-present criticism and focus. I swore if I had another chance to talk to Romeo, I wouldn’t embarrass myself. Yet here I am, gawking like a scared little girl.

This is the scene Romeo’s used to. The kind of behavior he expects. Sexy, confident girls. Not virgins who have no idea what they’re doing.

Well, some idea.

But my ex-boyfriend, Bobby, might as well have been an armadillo for all the similarity he has to Romeo.

The arrogance of having a road name like Romeo. Either he’s really good in the sack or has a micro penis.

God, I hope it’s not micro penis.

The way he’s staring at me and running his hand over a chin full of scruff, I think I’m about to find out.

“Did you have a good birthday?” he asks while watching me as if I’m the only person in the room.

Because he wants to get in your panties, idiot.

He doesn’t even pretend he’s not checking me out. His deep sapphire eyes gleam with sex and mischief while they appreciate my long, bare legs, covered by a short, frilly skirt. I practically feel the weight of his gaze as it moves up my body, over my hips, and over the swells of my breasts, barely concealed by the flimsy fabric of my camisole.

“Not really. I think you can make it better, though.” Where the hell did I find the lady balls to say that?

Romeo likes my forwardness. A feral smile lights up his face. Hell help me, this man’s insanely hot. The beard scruff doesn’t hide the hard angles of his jaw. The fitted T-shirt he’s wearing under his leather vest hints at the rock-hard body underneath. Tattoos peek out from every available inch of skin. His thick, dark hair seems too wild to be contained and falls over his forehead in a way that declares badass. Every inch of him screams reckless, gruff, crude, dirty, dangerous, and utterly irresistible.

I’m so in over my head with this guy…this man.

And I can’t wait to see what happens next.
